FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CODE OF ETHICS REQUIREMENT

Where can I take the course?

The CE Shop - Look for the "NAR ETHICS" flag. Remember - TREC Core does not meet the requirement.

I forgot to complete the course on time! What do I do?

Complete the course! Members who have not completed the course by the deadline will be suspended. Members who have not completed the course by March 1st will be terminated. A suspension or termination may delay membership in another association, so it is advisable to complete the course even if you are planning to retire your license.

I am an appraiser - not a REALTOR. I am not required to do this.

A REALTOR is a member of the National Association of REALTORS - not a real estate licensee. Both appraisers and real estate licensees hold REALTOR membership at SMTAR.

I have already completed all of my education this license renewal.

Code of Ethics is required by the National Association of REALTORS for REALTOR membership renewal. It is not related to your license.

I am grandfathered and am not required to complete education.

Code of Ethics is required by the National Association of REALTORS. All members must complete this course to renew their membership. Licensees may be grandfathered by their licensing board from their education requirements. The two are not related.

I completed Etihcs as part of pre-licensing, USPAP, TREC Core or another course.

Courses approved to meet the NAR Code of Ethics requirement must be at least 2.5 hours and specifically cover the REALTOR Code of Ethics. Pre-licensing courses, appraiser courses, and TREC Core do not cover enough of the REALTOR Code of Ethics to meet the NAR requirement. You can receive credit for earning the C2EX designation, or if you must take professional standards training due to service on a state committee, otherwise, you must complete a separate 2.5+ course about the REALTOR Code of Ethics.

The REALTOR Code of Ethics, a living document updated annually by NAR, is the foundation of our organization.
